The Museum was opened in 1938, but the formation of this collection has a much longer history. In the early 20 – th century in Rostov – on – Don was founded by Rostov – Nakhichevan society of fine arts, exhibitions which exhibited works by artists from different cities of Russia, which later became the part of the private collection of local art patrons, and after the revolution, arrived in the Museum.
May 1, 1920, the Museum worked as Donskoy regional Museum of art and antiquities, 1927 – as a part of the regional Museum of the peoples of the North Caucasus, in 1934 – 1936 not functioned since 1937 on the rights of the Department of the Rostov regional Museum of local lore.
At the origins of the Museum, the artists were M. S. Saryan and L. D. Silin, writer – M. A. Shahinian. From the first years of its existence the Museum collection was supplemented by exhibits from the main museums of the country – the Tretyakov gallery, the Hermitage, the Russian Museum. In January 1942, the collection was evacuated in Pyatigorsk, where it was looted by German troops. During the postwar years some of the stolen paintings were gradually returned to the Museum, but all the pre – war collection and could not be restored. The second time the Museum had opened in June 1946, the assigned rooms Rostov art College renamed after M. B. Grekov. C 1958 occupies a building built in 1898 by architect N. A. Doroshenko for a well – known lawyer – A. P. Petrov.
In the chamber halls with wonderful ceiling moldings in the past – the living rooms of the home owners, is a permanent exhibition of the Museum Section devoted to ancient art, represented by the icons of the Moscow school of painting of the late period of XVI – XVII centuries, icons of XVIII – XIX centuries, collected during expeditions to the villages in Central Russia, near, Vladimir and collection North of letters" from the Arkhangelsk region, collected in the 1950s, Rostov architect Pyankova.
Collection of Russian art is in the collection of the leading place. In the halls of the Museum you can see the works of famous masters of the XVIII – XX centuries: A. Antropov, K. Bryullov, I. Repin, I. Kramskoy, V. Surikov, I. Aivazovsky, I. Levitan. The Museum has a very complete collection of the works of K. Korovin from 9 works created in the heyday of his work. The Department of art of the 20 – th century is represented by works of Y. Pimenov, G. Nyssa, A. and S. Tkacheva, A. Laktionova, I. Mashkov, L. Stukanov, B. Weisberg, So Pupils, V. Koshlyakov, A. Ter – Oganyan, and many others. Great place in the Museum are the paintings Don artists.
Currently, the Museum occupies two buildings: one of them is located in the historic centre, in one of the most beautiful streets in the city of Pushkin. An old mansion for the openwork fence was built in 1898 by the famous Rostov architect N. A. Doroshenko and before the revolution belonged to the lawyer Management Vladikavkaz railway A. A. Petrov.
In 2009 he completed the reconstruction of the Museum's art galleries (other Chekhov, 60). There were opened halls of Western European art and a room intended for changing exhibitions of contemporary art. Foreign art collection reflects the basic processes of development of the art of the XVII – XIX centuries in Western Europe. In its funds presents all the major European schools of this period: Italian, Dutch, Flemish, French, German. Among them are the works of caravaggisti M. Preti, Venetian J. Carpione. Decorates collection painting workshop of P. P. Rubens. Interesting works by French artists of the XVII century, J. F. de Troyes "Landscape with figures", A. Pena and etc.
In opened storage is the art of the peoples of the East, represented by such works as porcelain, carved bone snuff – boxes of China of the 18-th century, rare splints and Japanese netsuke. Decoration of Oriental collection are two stone sculptures twins – heaven, Dating back to the XII century. The entire fourth floor is occupied by a Department store and restoration workshop.
