Museum of Modern Art on Dmitrovskaya opened its doors to visitors on February 25, 2005. His discovery was a significant event in the cultural life of Rostov-on-Don. The initiators of the first private museum of contemporary art in Russia were Elena Levina (CAP LTD “TITAN- INVEST ", Rostov -on- Don) and Vyacheslav Davydenko.
Museum on the Dmitrovskaya is a fully charity project and in accordance with the definition of the International Council of Museums is "a non – profit institution designed to serve the community and contribute to its development, available to the general public … “
Museum bases its work on the basic principles of museological practices: collecting, storing and exhibiting. The historical and cultural mission of the museum is in the formation and promotion of the artist collections of the 20th and 21st centuries as well. Funds of the museum include more than 1,800 works, mostly paintings and drawings from 1930s to the present day.
For 8 years, the museum has amassed an impressive track record, organized and hosted more than 100 exhibitions. These include international projects: an exhibition of the master of American popular artist Andy Warhol, Italian photography end of 19th to beginning of 20th centuries from: Alinari family archive, Venetian sculptor Gianmaria Potenza, French video installer Bertrand Plan (Bump it), Lvov’s city graphics from the beginning of 19th to the beginning of 21st centuries, Anatoly Kuznetsov, the Belarusian painter of non-objective direction.
As well as the exhibition of the classics of the Soviet period A. A. Labasa, N. N. Volkova, O. P. Filatcheva, V. K. Zubareva and projects of contemporary art – conceptual design " Session Connections", an exhibition of artist books "Buk – ART“ , performance V. Murina "He – here", the exhibition project by artists from St. Petersburg of “Gluklya i Zaplya”, exhibition project FluxRus group from Taganrog "Belka and Strelka", etc.
Particular attention is paid to representatives of the Rostov museum art school. Solo exhibitions of V. I. Kulchenko, A. A. Usenko , A. A. Lishnevskogo, S. S. and L. S. Skoptsova, V. E. Mahnitskogo, I. A. Kurkova, I. A. Kuzmenko, L. A. Kabaruhina and etc., were organized and held.
One of the priorities of the museum is the close cooperation with students and youth creative groups, and as a result – exhibitions, competitions , festivals: "Creators of the twenty-first century ", "History ", " The Passion According to Julian and Gregory ", " tame the light ": freeze light etc. In addition to exhibitions, which were held in the halls of the museum, organized traveling exhibitions in hospitals, clinics, health centers, cafes, banks in Rostov-on-Don, Moscow, Krasnodar, Yaroslavl.
The museum was involved with the project " Conceptualism: here and there" in the South Russian Biennale of Contemporary Art (2010).
The museum operates the season ticket “new cultural space” for children and adults with an interest in art culture and aesthetic education. Anyone can attend concerts and lectures on history of arts along with practical exercises.
